Is Gemini 4 Free? No – What Google Actually Charges for Argon

Short answer: no. Gemini 4 Argon is not free on any route – not on the API, and not in the Gemini app. Here is what Google actually charges, route by route, so you can spot the difference between Argon and the genuinely free Google models it gets confused with.

The API: paid only, no free tier

There is no free tier for Gemini 4 Argon on the Gemini API. Access is paid only, at these Standard rates (per 1M tokens): $2 input / $10 output until 30 November 2026, doubling to $4 / $20 from 1 December 2026. The output price includes thinking tokens, so the reasoning tokens are billed too. The full tier table – Batch/Flex, Priority and cached input, before and after the rise – is on the Gemini 4 Argon pricing page.

The app: subscription only

Consumer access runs through the Gemini app and AI Mode, and it needs a subscription: Google AI Pro ($19.99/mo) or Ultra. There is no free Argon in the app.

The trap: Pro does not include the API

The most common money mistake with Argon is assuming a Google AI Pro subscription covers everything. It does not: a Pro subscription does not include API or AI Studio access. For the API you need Ultra, or a paid API key billed at the rates above. Pro gets you Argon in the app and AI Mode – nothing more.

Ignore the outdated “partners only” claims

Some older pages still say Argon is limited to pre-launch partner access. That was true at announcement – Argon was announced on 30 September 2026 to Fairwind cybersecurity partners only – but it has been out of date since Argon became generally available on 13 October 2026. Argon is on general sale; it is simply not free. The full picture is in Gemini 4 Argon Explained.

So what IS free?

Google does have a free route into its models – a different, smaller model with a free tier – and there are honest free options around the other October launches too. They are collected, with clear labels about what each one is not, in Free Alternatives to Muse Wonder, Gemini 4 Argon and FLUX 3 Max.
